Side View Mirror

These custom-designed silhouette mirrors are modern day heirlooms in the making.

It is a project I've been developing and testing for several months, and I'm happy to say, they're ready for purchase! Please visit shmattah.com to order.

Ordering is easy. All you need to do is send in a photograph of the person whose profile you'd like made (gift certificates are also available). The silhouette shape is personally crafted from your profile, and then sent to the factory where it is carefully cut from lightweight, shatterproof acrylic mirror. The Side View mirrors make a fantastic wedding, anniversary or birthday present.
The particular eyes and nose of the silhouette are important, of course. But there are other details that can make your mirror special. In this case, a signature unruly ponytail is an interesting, personalized detail. The Side View mirror is a wonderful way to document changes over time. Imagine a family's growth chart... in mirrors! This baby's signed up for an annual Side View mirror (I know because she's mine). As a grouping, the mirrors are sweet and practical. What better way to display and immortalize your family portrait?

They come in two sizes: large and small (roughly 15 inches vs. 7 inches). I plan to amass a wall of friend and family for my collection.

Coolest Person of the Year

It is times like these - times when Time magazine asks me to hand-letter a poster declaring Ryan Gosling the 'Coolest Person of the Year', for their Person of the Year issue - that grown-up Julie wishes she could go back and tell 13 year-old Julie that all those hours writing notes in bubble letters would totally pay off. I mean, please. I think these 'highlights' are from my days of drawing jellybeans. I dont think I ever even really liked jellybeans. Is this a phase every preteen goes through? The initial concept for this illustration was that Ryan Gosling would have a Coolest Person of the Year tattoo across his chest, but the half-naked Ryan Gosling photo wasn't able to be used. Here is the tattoo he would have had.

Knoll Holiday Card

I was so thrilled when Knoll decided to go with this for their company-wide holiday card: 'This holiday, we wish you good cheer (crossed out) a good chair.'

When I came up with the idea, I was really excited: it is classic and timeless, but with a twist. Perfect for modern furniture giant, Knoll.

Knoll Warehouse Sale

The employees working for the annual Knoll Warehouse Sale needed t-shirts to wear to the event. I came up with the idea of listing some of the classic Knoll designers on their shirts; those true Knoll devotees would relate to: Harry Bertoia, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and of course, Florence Knoll.

Esquire iphone Rings

Esquire Magazine came up with a list of 79 things they hate. Among them: two specific iphone rings, for which I created typographic equivalents. The first, seen here, is Marimba... ...and the second: Bell Tower. It was a challenge to transliterate the sounds into actual letters. Is it CLING CLOOONG or more of a FRRRRRING FRRRRRONG? (This was where I spent the bulk of my time in the intial research phase).
